Scalamobil stair climber – prices, costs and experience with stairlifts from Scalamobil

The Scalamobil from the company Ulrich Alber GmbH is an alternative to the stairlift, which is particularly suitable for wheelchair users. Compared to a classic stairlift, the Scalamobil has advantages and disadvantages. The Scalamobil is more flexible and cheaper, but always requires an operator and therefore cannot be used alone. An alternative for people with limited mobility who are not dependent on a wheelchair is the Scalacombi.

Stairlifts are an expensive investment, which therefore wants to be well considered. Because there are definitely alternatives to the classic stairlift. One such alternative is the Scalamobil from the company Ulrich Alber GmbH. This is a mobile stair climber that can be used flexibly. An alternative for people with limited mobility who are not dependent on a wheelchair is the Scalacombi.

Who is the company Ulrich Alber GmbH?

The company Ulrich Alber GmbH was founded in Albstadt in 1986. The most important product, and therefore the synonym for the company Ulrich Alber GmbH, is the Scalamobil, which has been on the market since 1988. The Scalamobil is a mobile stair climber and thus an alternative to the classic stair lift, which is especially appreciated by wheelchair users. Meanwhile, the product range of Ulrich Alber GmbH includes a whole series of portable mobility aids for wheelchair users.

These include, for example, auxiliary drives that facilitate mobility. Ulrich Alber GmbH is the market leader in this field. The company attaches great importance to its own developments and innovations. In total, more than 50 international patents and utility models have been registered over the years. The Scalamobil is also patent-protected and is constantly being further developed. In 2010, therefore, the new generation was launched with the Scalamobil S35 and Scalacombi S34 models.

Advantages and disadvantages of stair climbers

The stair climber is a mobile solution that does not need to be permanently installed. This results in a high degree of flexibility. For example, the Scalamobil can be used on almost any staircase without having to make any arrangements. The Scalamobil can easily cope with different floor coverings and even curved staircases. The use of such a stair climber is also possible outside the own four walls without any problems. The Scalamobil is so compact that it can be transported and taken along without any problems (for example in the car). So all stairs lose their terror, not only the stairs in your own home.

Unlike stair lifts, stair climbers can be covered in full by health insurance if medically necessary. For the buyer, the stair climber is thus a favorable alternative to the stair lift. This applies by the way also if the health insurance does not step in with the financing. The Scalamobil is available from just under 6,000 €. Platform lifts for wheelchair users are usually much more expensive, especially when used on curved stairs. A major disadvantage of the stair climber is the fact that an additional operator is always needed. Therefore, the Scalamobil cannot be used alone. The use of a stair lift is perceived as more comfortable overall.

Scalamobil: mobile stair climber for wheelchairs

The Scalamobil features a patented climbing mechanism. This enables effortless climbing of all types of stairs. The operator merely guides the Scalamobil, no effort is required. The drive uses a rechargeable battery. This energy storage has a capacity that is sufficient for up to 300 steps, which corresponds to about 20 floors. The battery can be easily removed from the Scalamobil and recharged using a charging cable. The range of the stair climber can be extended even further by using several batteries. The maximum total weight to be transported is 180 kg. The Scalamobil can be used on almost any staircase without any problems.

The floor covering is irrelevant, so that no structural or other changes to the staircase have to be made. The use of a stair climber is also possible on very narrow or curved stairs. The Scalamobil brakes automatically at each step edge and ensures maximum safety thanks to patented safety sensor technology. All that needs to be done is to attach a quick-release fastener to the wheelchair itself, which can then be connected to the Scalamobil. Almost all wheelchairs are suitable for this purpose. The Scalamobil can be easily disassembled to become a mobile stair climber. You can easily transport the Scalamobil in the car and therefore take it everywhere.

Scalacombi: Mobile stair climber with built-in seat

People who have limited mobility but do not need a wheelchair will find an interesting alternative in the Scalacombi. The Scalacombi is a mobile stair climber with a built-in seat. The climbing mechanism has simply been taken over from the Scalamobil. This means that the Scalacombi can climb any type of staircase, regardless of its design or the type of flooring used. Four integrated safety brakes stop the Scalacombi automatically at each edge of the stairs.

When not in use or for transport, the Scalacombi can be folded to save space. This means that the Scalacombi can also be used as a mobile unit. The drive is powered by a rechargeable battery, which allows a range of up to 300 steps. The battery can be removed and recharged independently of the stair climber at any power outlet. The effort required to climb stairs is minimal, but the Scalacombi still requires an operator.
